This card was rather tame, with the exception of Poirier vs. Miller, and ‘Jacare’ Souza nearly ripping Tim Boetsch’s arm off. Using the Verdict MMA app, I will share my fight predictions for the card.
Poirier and Miller had a great back and forth brawl. MMA fans saw a refined version of Poirier. Although he couldn’t help standing in the pocket and engaging in a brawl at the end of the first round, we saw him fight with a much more tactful and measured approach. Although both fighters were looking to finish the fight without judges, they provided an exciting match for fans.
Glover Teixeira played it safe by utilizing his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and implementing his ground game on Cannonier. Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza showed why he is at the top of the division, by wrenching Boetsch’s arm in a kimura after a takedown in the first round.
Silva was gifted a decision victory against Brunson after a peculiar fight. Silva’s techniques didn’t look as good as they used to, especially his once feared clinch. In the clinch, Silva let Brunson uppercut him with intensity. Though Silva certainly had good moments, and showed a substantial improvement in his wrestling, he looked aged, something he also admitted.
The main event was bound to be a decision but, it was littered with controversy. De Randamie landed punches after the end of the round twice in the fight, some of which were her best blows after the bell. Holm also attested to this during the post-fight press conference.. The decision not to deduct any points was met with criticism, leading to a #NotMyChampion trend on Twitter. The failure to deduct points was the defining reason why the fight resulted in the victory of De Randamie and not a draw. This exposed a major hole in the NYSAC emergence into the MMA scene.
Holm’s ineffective grappling was against De Randamie was also surprising. Holm had more MMA experience entering the bout but, she was unable to implement anything besides striking, and De Randamie’s style seemed to be troublesome for Holm.
During the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, when asked about fighting Cris Cyborg, De Randamie quickly announced she may need surgery on her hand from torn ligaments rooted from a fight in 2015. Interestingly, when asked about a rematch with Holm, De Randamie seemed enthusiastic. The landscape for female MMA will be fascinating with Cyborg on the horizon.
My predictions were fairly accurate and landed me in the top 10% in the world. If you’re interested in more, return for UFC Fight Night 105.
